About Sagesse du Jour

Sagesse du Jour offers a daily thought adapted from ancient Indian public-domain texts, the same thought shown to every visitor that day.

Where the thoughts come from

The 365 thoughts published on this site come from ancient Indian texts: the Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads, the Dhammapada, the Tirukkural, the Vedas, the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, the Panchatantra, the Hitopadesha, the Yoga Sutras, proverbs from oral tradition, and maxims attributed to Chanakya. These texts are free of copyright: their age places them in the public domain.

We have not reproduced any protected modern translation. Each thought published on Sagesse du Jour is a free adaptation in French, written for this site from the original source texts. The adaptation aims for clarity and readability in contemporary French, without betraying the meaning of the original text.

This work of adaptation, rather than a simple word-for-word translation, seemed necessary to us for two reasons. First, because modern translations of these texts are, for the most part, protected by copyright: reproducing them without authorization would have posed a fundamental problem. Second, because the style of old public-domain translations, often dated, does not lend itself well to quick daily reading. Adapting allowed us to remain faithful to the meaning of the source texts while producing French that is readable today, without relying on a protected text.

One thought, one day, for everyone

The site assigns a thought to each day of the year, according to a fixed calendar of 365 entries. All visitors who consult the site on the same day therefore see the same thought, regardless of the time or place of their visit. This is intentional: it does not depend on any account, any saved preference, or any individual tracking of the visitor.

The calendar loops on itself every year: once the 365 thoughts have been covered, the cycle starts again. This choice avoids having to produce new adaptations indefinitely, while still offering, over a full year, a fairly broad overview of the ancient Indian texts mentioned above.

Who publishes this site

Sagesse du Jour is published by Aromanou Ltd, a company incorporated under Mauritian law whose main activity is aromatherapy. This site has no content link to that activity: it is a separate editorial project, published alongside the company's main activity.

The commercial link nonetheless exists, and we would rather state it clearly than leave it unsaid. Sagesse du Jour occasionally links to the Aromaustral by Aromanou shop and to the Souffle & Jardin app, both published by Aromanou Ltd. These links are identified as such wherever they appear on the site.
